We use Nomachine (aka NX) on the Windows PCs to remotely access the AMS Linux server cluster. Download and install the Windows Nomachine Client from here. Please follow the following steps to install and configure Nomachine on your Windows machine.
The older version i.e. Nomachine 3.5 is available here for download.
NoMachine client 4 uses by default the NX protocol, which is not supported by NX servers earlier than version 4.
When connecting to NX 3.5 servers, remember that older servers support only SSH connections and NoMachine login. This means that you must have installed on your machine a NoMachine package supporting SSH.
Step 1 - Double click on “add a computer” in the NoMachine player UI.
Step 2 - In the “Create a connection” UI, enter any session name of your choice (say MyAms1) and enter one of the AMS server addresses (ams1.boisestate.edu or ams2.boisestate.edu). Leave the port number as 22.
Step 3 - Choose to use protocol SSH and click on Advanced button.
Step 4 - Choose “Use the NoMachine login”
Step 5 - Click Continue to finish the set-up procedure
Step 6 - Connect to start the session.
Step 7 - Use your AMS login and password provided by the course. (Note: Don’t use your broncoweb login here.) You may choose to save the password.
Step 8 - Click on <New virtual desktop or custom session> and select “Create a new KDE virtual desktop.” (Avoid GNOME as it hangs). Use appropriate screen settings (single or dual monitor etc.) You should be ready to use your Linux Session now.
After setting up Nomachine, you will see the icon in the player UI in the Step 1. Use this configuration for subsequent logins.
Closing the Window: Hover over the top-right corner of the screen. You will see the page curve, and then click. Choose the icon with an array in the bottom-left of the screen to minimize the screen. You may close the window by right clicking on it. You can either terminate or suspend the session for future use.
Download the older version i.e. Nomachine 3.5.
Answers to common issues with Nomachine are provided here. For further information visit the official Nomachine FAQs.
Ans. Either you are using wrong login or password information, or there is some issue with your ssh authentication. Make sure you are using the AMS login/password, not the broncoweb login/password. If you believe you are using the right login/password, contact the course TA for help with a screenshot of your client and the time when you attempted the login.
